One thing that strikes me in this discussion is that it serves as a reminder how much "micro-instability" there probably is in most tripod set-ups, and how challenging it is to get a *truly* rock-solid support for the camera
Three hints to improve tripod stability:
Don't extend the center column, ever;
Wood tripods absorb more vibration and transmit less than metal;
A sandbag, placed on top of the lens/body combo (avoiding moving parts like focus and zoom rings) as close to the center of gravity as possible does a great deal to enhance stability and reduce vibration.
