I was using a 2x Extender with the 300mm on an EOS3, with a remote
switch.
The ball-head was locked up solid, as I was shooting in a permanent hide
in
one of the local nature reserves.
I did not use mirror lock-up.
I didn't actually take any shots like this, but turned IS off when I saw
the
floating effect, so it may have had no effect, but I don't know.

With a loose head for panning, I would certainly leave IS on.

Keith,

I used the 300mm and it worked fine. Does not make sense why the IS
would just turn off.
