I've worked for a bunch of companies where our lower-end product was physically the same as our higher-end product but had features and speed shut-off (slowed down) thorough software switches.
I wouldn't be surprised to find that Canon only had 2 camera CPU's and maybe 2 autofocus sensors and they just enabled features through software. I can't say that they do this for sure, we'll need some evidence from dissasembled camera bodies. Volunteers?
