Thanks for the opinions regarding the 300 f4 IS.  Seems like the consensus is 
that the IS is not quite as sharp, at least wide open, but that we are not 
talking about a world of difference.  I think the problem may be that because of 
the IS I tend to try to take the easy way out and hand hold it, perhaps at 
too slow shutter speeds.  I will have to give it more of a try with IS off and 
mounted on a tripod.
