Hi Howard,

Being focused on sports I have this tendency to shoot wide-f'ing-open
wherever possible. This is due to a variety of historical reasons most
having to do with never having enough shutter speed (I liked my slowish
tranny films), being generally surrounded by ugly backgrounds which leads me
to favor a high level of subject isolation.

Thus, shooting WFO also emphasizes some of the differences between the EF
300 2.8L and EF 300 4L IS because the EF 300 2.8L is really outstanding when
used WFO all day long where as the EF 300 4L IS struggles until it gets to
f/8 where it seems to sharpen up quite nicely. This caused me an other
problem as now my backgrounds are much less isolated and my shutter speeds
are really getting slow and IS is having to work over-time.

So you can see my preferences have come from the environment I often shoot
in and why you generally see so many big white guns at sporting events block
your view. Having gone digital I can see that the EF 300 4L IS has a near
perfect spot in my lens line up now when considered with the 1.3X 35mmEFOV
factor of the EOS 1D body. I may have to see if they have improved the
newest production version of the EF 300 4L IS lenses and buy a new one even
though this runs counter to my own best advice.

Cheers/Chip
