Hi Greg,

Every lens maker has managed to deliver a less than optimum lens here and
there. Though some have earned very poor reputations Sigma was one of the
worst. I bought a new Canon EF 50 1.4USM from Samy's (one of the few new EF
mount lenses I've bought), and the front element managed to get loose
shortly after coming out of the box. I took it down to Canon's regional
service center and they had it back to me in 5 days shooting sharper than
when new.

IMO Sigma has come a long way, not quite as far as I would like them to.
But I no longer dismiss their lenses as junk anymore. Sigma's optical lens
designs have been good and have been improving steadily over the years, they
have managed to get their act together in terms of mechanical design and
have even improved production quality in their most recent series of new
lenses. If Sigma continues to improve at this rate in the same fashion, in
a just few more years IMO Sigma may be close enough to Canon that even I
would consider them and that's saying a LOT! Heck even now I'm giving a
hard look at the Sigma 14mm 2.8EX to regain some of my WA capability on the
EOS 1D.

Cheers/Chip
