I finally decided to chip in here. There are alternatives as well if you
must must must shoot on carpet. You can spend about $30 and get enough
materials to do this.

On top of the carpet, I place one of those rigid office-chair mats that
were all the fad in the 80s (I seem to be in a constant state of roll if I
use one of those) directly on top of the carpet. Next I place a couple of
sheets of Bath Board on top depending on how large of an area I need.
Bath board can be picked up from your local home depot and has lots of
other great uses as well. It can be used for dry erase markers, and I
suppose you could use it in your bathroom since thats what it is designed
for.

I then roll my seamless paper out on top of it. Since my seamless paper
roll is just a tad bit longer than my bathboard, portability is not really
an issue (I've got a tahoe).

Just my $0.02. :)
