I like shooting sports and this is mostly what I do unless I'm shooting
my
family. But often will go to shoot and assist for one of my friends.
He's
a buddy of mine, his kids and mine are classmates. So I go on a lot of
local area shoots mostly for music magazines, record labels etc. though
we
also get to do fashion (mostly lifestyle related stuff), and
advertising.
Blink 182 has a label and clothing line, this is what's at the lab for
snips
as we speak. Most of what we do is on location so portability is
important,
flexibility is good to have too.

We try not to be involved in event or social shoots but have on occasion
done them. It can keep clients happy once in a while and it's usually
easy
money. For full body or small groups we look for a hard surface to set
up
on when using paper. I've never seen a location that had carpeted
parking
lots and kitchens so we can usually find a place near the event to
set-up.

Mostly we shoot musical personalities and low body count music groups.
Most
groups we shoot as and where we find them, hallways, elevators,
stairwells,
cars and on the street. We occasionally will shoot in a music studio
sometimes during recording, sometimes during post production and
sometimes
just as a convenient prop. Studio shooting can usually produce good
images
with simple one or two light set-ups.

Sometimes, like at a recent Sugar Ray shoot we did, we'll rent a
conference
room and shot them on canvas and or paper for variety and all around the
hotel. IMO the best shots are in places most people never think of,
like
the little service/storage area I found and lighted with a single
Dynalight
head and umbrella. This image turned into a cover shot for Warp
Magazine
last I heard. I always hate having to carry and set up canvas
backdrops,
they weigh too much and we have to load them back in the van when done
shooting. Paper we usually toss unless we bought a long roll or we have
some other have plan for it.

Makes sense. But don't you still run into times when the paper tears
apart even on a hard surface?
