I always leave automatic reduction of fill flash disabled (99% of the
time) because I want to control the exposure rather than have the
camera's exposure do it for me. This way I avoid potential problems.
Auto reduction is nice when you are not doing it for serious work,
(i.e., snapshots, picture of the dog, kids, etc.), but for more formal
applications I do not trust it.  I say this having used it for paid work
where I needed to re-shoot because it varied far too much.  So that
lesson cost me time and money.
