Hi CraigZ,

IMO it's doubtful that the EOS metering system is sophisticated enough to
successfully recognize and fully consider contrast in exposure. Maybe the
Nikon meter could go it as they have so many data points available and even
color data! I also don't think that there is enough resolution in the EOS
metering system to effectively do this except in the most vague sort of way.
Between the lack of speed and resolution the metering system is a weak way
to accomplish this. BUT if this data were available I'd imagine the EOS
metering system could be programmed to fully consider contrast range in the
compromise that makes up exposure values based on the camera mode and
settings (photographer's intent).

One obvious way to get this done would be to incorporate a small full frame,
low res. secondary CCD sensor without any AA filters in front of it to
simply collect scene luminance as seen through the lens. Alternately in
place of the current metering sensor you could simply replace it with a
small color sensor and have both color and luminance data available to the
metering system. Then the meter would have the ability to capture both
brightness range and color information for better white balance setting.
The data could be used to aid the metering system making it aware of the
contrast range of the scene and white balance and added to the data normally
stored with a RAW file. The RAW conversion program would then have a good
idea of the level of illumination and white balance data at the time of
exposure and compare the exposure settings to see what the photographer's
intent was (through the camera mode settings), or could simply be used to
automatically set the white/black and white balance points during RAW
conversion, great for batching.

Cheers/Chip
