I agree.  That front edge focusing ring must be a real pain when using a
polarizer AND manually focusing.  As has often been stated,  this is one of
the ways in which the earlier version of the 50/1.8 is superior - focusing
ring in the normal position.  That and the metal mount and  DOF scale,
although I don't use that all that much.  I got a used 50/1.8 "Mk.I" for $60
USD.  Haven't found the lack of USM to be a problem yet, although it's not
inconceivable.

(OT PS: I've always wondered how much carryover from the FD 50/1.8 there is,
since that's generally regarded as one of the best FD lenses, even sharper
than the 1.4.  But as you say, sharpness isn't everything, and that was an
interesting site you posted.  Makes me very curious what would happen if the
same comparisons were done with the many versions of the FD 50mm.)
