I think you guys are confused. Only the 50mm f/1.8 II version has focusing on the front ring. Both the 50mm f/1.8 (orig) and the 50mm f/1.4 USM have a traditional focusing ring about halfway down the lens barrel. I can't certify for the 1.4, but on the 1.8 (orig) the filter threads do NOT rotate when focusing.
