The ST-E2 is exactly designed to trigger another flash units, just that it uses a
more complex light "morse" code instead of a single burst to do so.
I don't see the harm on re-using what you already have instead of spending your
hard-earned money in silly gadgets.
And thus the timing will be off if you use the ST-E2, the slaves will fire either too fast or too slow.
The peanuts that ignore the pre-flash use a simple timing mechanism, IFIRC 200 msec. This can be too fast or too slow depending on your camera/flash.
I'm all for cheap, but a cheap flash converted to an IR master is $5. Hardly wasting "hard-earned money."
