I would think it is hard for Canon and the likes of Sigma, Tamron,

DSLR 1.6X crop market.

I mean, how many people are buying 1Ds vs 10D?

I've been very very seriously thinking about a 15-30. I still think that
within the next 2 months or so, there will be a lot more lenses for this
range. Nikon seems to be getting a great lens range for (12-24, 18-55,
fisheye).

As CMOS development get better you will see larger sensors. This will first come from
the likes of Canon and some other who develop their own. Nikon uses SONY image
sensors and there is not a good reason for Sony to produce a larger sensor when the
Nikon market for their sensors is maybe 2-3% compared to their consumer market. This
is the reason for the Nikon 12-24mm lens and probably a reason for the new EF-S lens.
I am sure we will see a few more EF-S lenses but we will eventually see a lower priced
full size sensor as well.
