Not sure why you would want to write a program instead of using one that already exists. I have written several programs, but only when I could not find something that did what I want.
For easy conversion, take a look at Pic2Pic Pro. The website is: www.wavelsoftware.com. I am not associated with the company, but a very very happy user. Been using it since it was in Beta. Very fast, and has tons of options for handling files. I have used P2P to convert up to 15,000 Kodak TIFs to JPGs and web-ready jpgs in one run. Had it do a color adjustment, watermark, and rotate. Done by when I woke up. If the author does not yet have RAW in it, he is working on it. Last time I emailed with him, he was programing it in. It already does DCR and NEF format, due to requests by users. Take a look.
