Hi

I presently use an EOS 10 (not D) and I love it; well I love it again
now that I had the shutter bumpers replaced last year. I am looked
for 'longer reach' with a quality lens and have been considering
either the 100-400 or the 70-200 (the latter with occasional use of a
2x MkII).

A head-head review of these combinations can be found by
typing '400v400' into Google. Not surprisingly the 100-400 came out
tops at the 400mm end. Obviously there are many parameters to
consider - each will have its own pros/cons.

In my thinking I am planning for an upgrade sometime soon-ish to
digital - possibly the 10D. So here is what seems to me to be an
important consideration - dust. The 70-200 has a 'sealed' rear
element and all focusing/zooming goes on internally. The 100-400 on
the other hand has an 'open back' construction so that it blows/sucks
like a balloon pump when push-pull zoomed; presumably injecting
air/dust into the camera body.

I have read lots of traffic about dust on digital sensors - so it
seems that the type of construction used in the 100-400 is really
unsuitable for digital cameras - at least if you have another option -
 take it.

What do folks think? Is this a big deal or not?

Thanks,

Steve
