Your experience is very atypical. Many, many people have used non Canon BP-511 batteries, and you just never hear of a problem. I own 5 of them myself, not counting the two I sold with my Pro90 and the one I sold with my D60, and of the eight none ever gave me a bit of trouble. One was a Delco I bought from B&H, the others were the <$10 variety from that auction place.
