You will definitely need a tripod to get anything close to a sharp
photo.

You will end up shooting wide open much of the time, and with high
speed films. Unfortunately, the interesting light is towards sunset
and just after sunrise.

I'd stick to a 1.4 converter, perhaps  Kenko would do.

As to AF, you will find your viewfinder much darker and MF difficult.
But don't let that stop you. You will be able to get shots you
couldn't get without the converter. If you use a tripod and are lucky.

I used my Kenko MC7 2X with my 75-300 for awhile and I did get some
sharp photos. Overall though, most shots were disappointing and the
lens's reach was still far short of long enough or sharp enough.

You can pick up a used converter quite cheap, play with it, and sell
it later. I'd ask Santa for something for substancial. :-)
