On my RT with TBE I get a > very precise readout of the current zoom-setting, in millimeters IIRC. Well it is often not all that precise. I decoded the TBE binary format back in 1990 and found out that the focal length granularity that the TBE can store is 0.5mm Maybe they did it, so that the FL of an upcoming EF 7.5mm fisheye could be stored. However there are hardly any zoom lenses that really transmit focal length on a mimllimeter let alone half millimeters base. E.g. my now sold Sigma 75-300mm lens just transmitted those values: 75 80 83 88 93 98 105 114 123 135 149 168 192 245 300 Canon lenses transmit more, but not all. The Canon EF 2.8/70-200L transmitted these: 70 73 75 78 80 85 90 93 95 98 100 105 110 115 120 125 130 135 140 145 150 155 160 165 170 175 180 185 190 195 200 If I remember correctly the old Tokina 2.8/28-70 MkI trasmitted every single millimeter FL.
