I think at some point they or the industy will have to come up with a more modular and/or open system. It seems idiotic to have to get a new 1ds if you have a 1d when all you should need are a couple of small boards and a sensor (I think)
As for openness, Everything on a digital camera can be serviced through a few pcmcia slots (or smaller). Even the sensor can be hung on to the bus.
