Hi Ken, Most (if not all) of the L lenses I own have plastic barrels. There are plastics and there are plastics if you get my drift. The plastic L lenses mostly use the better quality stuff. When Canon released the 400 DO, it was considered to be equal to an L lens, and the press release for the 70-300 DO IS stated "The lens boasts image quality approximating that of Canon's L series professional lenses." and "...delivers high image quality and high levels of resolution and contrast, rivalling the performance of Canon's legendary L-series lenses". So I'd expect that even though it's plastic, the lens will well built and hopefully also live up to Canon's optical claims. Contrary to popular opinion, the current model 75-300 IS is actually quite well built, but I was very unhappy with it's optical performance at the longer end of it's range. It also focused s-l-o-w-l-y, which the new model should address. I'm looking forward to the release of the DO zoom. Cheers Gary This message has passed through an insecure network.
