About my workflow: If I try to find images, I search trough filenames or dates. It is not perfect and it was OK when I was scanning film. Now, I am searching for a "free" solution. I tried iMatch today and it looks nice. (49 $) I'll try Extensis portfolio as well. (200$)

Speaking about workflow, I wonder if anyone knows about an EXIF + JPG extractor in Java sothat I could write a small Ant script to do my extraction. I looked a while ago but couldn't find anything usable. Don't know now ... 1 year after...

I've found iView Multimedia to be the best solution. I've tried Extensis Portfolio in the past. That was a number of years ago, though. I'm sure that Portfolio has improved, as has iView. iView unfortunately had a big price increase, so it's now the same price as Portfolio.

iView allows me to keep a catalog of thumbnails, with exif info, comments, keywords, etc on my hard drive, and the program lets me know on what disk the image is, and the path. It does fine with a huge range of file formats, including being able to read and display the embedded jpegs in Canon RAW format.

At present I use multiple hard drives for my images and 2 backups, as the drives are quite inexpensive, and data is quite secure when the drives are powered down and disconnected. CD's have faded and gone away quite quickly on me, and since Kodak stopped selling the Mitsui licensed gold disks they have been hard to come by. Also, 700Mb isn't much when your files are 6Mb for RAW at a minimum, and a lot bigger for works in progress or scanned images. DVDs and the various formats thereof don't give me any confidence at this time.
