Agreed, it will work, but only in TTL, you lose the E-TTL features.  I
didn't say it wouldn't work.
Are you sure the 300tl works with the EOS5 and 50E in full auto, or does it
work in full manual?  I don't remember the model Speedlite I had, but it
only worked as full manual on my A2, the equivalent of your EOS5.
