That's the big problem, the collar on the 600f4 does not come off , at
least not as far as I can see.

Joe,

I'm not sure about the 600 but the 70-200 and the 300(?) tripod collar
have a plastic and felt(?) insert.

Suggest you remove the collar if possible and check to see if the insert
is worn/damaged.

If so, it is almost certainly available as a spare part.
