Hi James,

I think it depends more on if you need the 400mm end of the 100-400 more
than the lens speed and improvement in image quality with the 70-200IS.
Something else to consider is if you are shooting with film or a digital
body, or plan to go to a digital body very soon.

Some lenses are less good on a DSLR than on a film body.  Some DSLR bodies
bring out the worst in lenses like the EF 28-135IS or EF 17-35 2.8L.  These
two lenses are not the best available but for most film shooters work pretty
well and produce images that are very good.  Stick them on a DSLR and you
may be surprised at how poorly they fair in terms of image quality.
