As for mechanical protection, ignoring cleaning/rubbing/splashing: 
consider a Cokin filterholder, permanently mounted.
Much better lens-cap too, only downside is the slightly larger 
size....but no damage to lens front if you rest it on 
table/concrete/gate/pole, or even put it upside down on a table when 
changing lenses (although I prefer the 'work area' of a PhotoTrekker 
folded open (with an additional foampad-lid covering the lower half  
(wanted more protection when skiing, folds/attaches between inner and 
outer layer of the PhotoTrekker-bottom)).
