Are you sure you mean a 420EX, there is also a 420EZ. The 420EX doesn't
have a manual mode, it works in E-TTL on type A bodies and TTL on any other
EOS body. The 420EZ supports manual and A-TTL modes, A-TTL and plain TTL
don't work on the D60 (or most new Canon digital bodies). See

If it was an EZ rather than an EX it would be fine on a film body.
