I've just checked the prices for Canon equipment on the B&H site and on 2
German sites (Internet Foto and NY Camera). For instance:

1Ds - $8000 (B&H) / 6886 Eur (Internet Foto - Germany)
1D mkII - $4495 (B&H) / 3997 Eur (NY Camera - Germany)
10D - $1500 (B&H) / 1444 Eur (NY Camera - Germany)
300D (aka Digital Rebel) - $850 (B&H) / 940 Eur (NY Camera - Germany)

EF 16-35/2.8 L - $1330 (B&H) / 1398 Eur (Internet Foto - Germany)
EF 24-70/2.8 L USM - $1150 (B&H) / 1199 Eur (NY Camera - Germany)
EF 70-200/2.8 L IS USM - - $1600 (B&H) / 1828 Eur (Internet Foto - Germany)

I remember not so many years ago, that prices in the US were about half of
the European prices. If we look at prices now, in some cases, the only
reason why the US price is still cheaper is because the USD lost value
against the Euro. If we take into account that in the US stores usually ask
for more if you require an International Warranty, we find out that, for
example, the EOS 1Ds is actually cheaper in Germany! As for the rest of the
gear, the savings are minimal and if/when the Euro returns to a 1 Eur = 1
USD exchange rate, then it won't be even worth bothering to buy gear in New
York, even if you happen to be passing by.
My question is: what happened???? Did prices go up in the US or have they
come down in Europe (namely Germany)?
