Hi Simon,

In most cases it's too quick to notice. The preflash occurs
between pressing the shutter and the lifting of the mirror.
The main flash fires when the shutter opens. Pretty close,
although some people can detect the 2 firings.

One way to detect it is to set rear curtain sync and use a
slow shutter speed. The main flash only fires as the shutter
is about to close.

Hi Fred,

Isn't this the case for E-TTL II, not for the original E-TTL?
The new version uses the distance information provided
with some lenses (mostly ring USM) and reverts to standard
E-TTL with other lenses.

Standard E-TTL uses the pre-flash. E-TTL II uses both
pre-flash and distance info from the lens where available.
Distance info is not used when the flash head is tilted, or
for macro. I don't believe it's used with multi-flash wireless
setups either.

Cheers
Gary
