However, I need to stay affordable, so I've been looking at the Canon 10D. BUT...none of the camera stores in my area have any in stock. In fact, one store I called said they had cancelled their last order for three of them, including any/all related accessories for this camera. They are anticipating a replacement to be announced by Canon shortly. When I asked, "how shortly", the person I was talking to couldn't specifically answer.
First, the 10D is CERTAINLY available if you hunt just a bit. Maybe not locally, but certainly available.
Second, even if Canon announces a new camera before dinnertime tonight, the 10D will STILL be an excellent machine and will still be capable of producing fine images.
Third, EVERYTHING you will read and hear about anticipated new Canon hardware is, for now, speculation and wishful thinking. Further, no one from inside Canon who values his continued employment will blab to ANYONE outside Canon (including preferred retailers) until unleashed by Canon USA's senior managers. To me this means that ANY noise generated by ANY retailer who claims to have heard the "inside skinny" is for now, noise. (And, information divulged by Canon to retailers or the news media under "do-not-reveal" promises won't be blabbed until the official release date either since the retailer who violates a no-talk promise risks never hearing advance new again and also risks losing co-op $$ and/or his dealership).
Fourth, Canon has a bad habit of announcing new hardware a _long_ time before it's actually available and then availability is so tight that people queue up and place paid orders with multiple retailers in the hope of getting the item at all. The result is often waiting lists which are months long.
So, use this for what you will, but a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush and you can take more photos now with the 10D you can order today than you can with the hoped for replacement camera which (until Photokina) is just so much air. BTW, Photokina startes Sept 28 2004.
