Well, yes and no.  Hard to *measure* the dynamic range
precisely, but not hard to get a pretty good seat of
the pants feel.  The white wall of the building is
clearly in bright sunlight.  We all know about where
that falls in terms of exposure value.  It's BRIGHT. 
And the door, while not in complete shadow, is pretty 
heavily shaded.  We all have a feel for where that
falls, too.  The image referenced, IIRC, had no post
processing.  Retaining detail in both the shadows and
highlights of this image is a pretty impressive
dynamic range, for either film or digital.
