Thanks for the comments guys. You have said what I already feared, that I probably wouldn't be satisfied by less than a DSLR. I do see the shutter lag a problem for action shots.
I must look into used prices, although the 300D is currently selling at 620 GBP - Body only.
Canon have been running a major television advertising campaign for the 300D in the UK. I don't know whether this means that it will be around for a while yet. There have been rumours about price drops and/or a newer cheaper model for some time. Now that the 20D is coming, an uprated 300D at 6MP shouldn't eat into Canon's sales on the next model up.
I am in no hurry, and certainly won't be buying before Photokina. Well, my birthday isn't until the end of October :-)
