I think it has been this way for the
10D, D30, D60 as well.

It looks to me that Canon's reasoning
for this is/was,  if somebody doesn't
want to fiddle with camera settings,
they probably don't want to go through
the "hassle" of having to convert RAW
files either.  Need I say "snapshooter"?

Or in other words,  if you want to use
RAW,  you better know what you're doing!
