It's very true that such projects are often fun to try, and results
might often make someone very happy. Even just playing around with the
concept can be rewarding enough in itself But you're first point in the
last paragraph (as I'm quoting) is very much worth taking into account.
It really depends on what the motivation is. If for experimentation,
it's great. If for money savings, not necessarily so. You can go
online, punch a few buttons and put in a credit card number, pay my $20
and get a really reliable product. Or, you can spend half a day running
around trying to pull together various bits and pieces of plastic and
tape or whatever, and try to make something just as effective.
Personally, my time is worth too much to me, so I'm willing to pay for
the overpriced Sto-Fen. (Overpriced only in terms of what it costs them
to make it, but not overpriced in terms of what it does for me both from
results and from the convenience standpoint of purchasing one.) Just
another viewpoint... ;-)

And, if you want to try it just to have some fun and maybe get a neat
diffuser, go for it! Have fun. :-)
