Set the camera to manual mode. Set the sutter speed to the fastest synchronized speed for your camera. (I use the 1V so I normally use 250). Set the aperature to get the depth of field you desire. Select the metering mode to cover the area you wish to be exposed correctly. With the metering area covering this area fire a FEL flash. If the FEL indicator in the flashes the picture will not be exposed correctly at the settings selected. If the FEL indicator does not blink the subject area will be exposed correctly even if you recompose the picture so it is not in the metering area.
With the camera in manual mode and using the EX series of flashes, the camera is in a flash priority mode and the flash will put out enough light to correctly expose the picture if at all possible.
