A quick postscript to this thread (no pun intended); I put together a Perl script which uses dcraw's parse.c and jhead to extract EXIF dates and use 'em to automatically rename JPGs, 20D CR2s, G5 CRWs (and it likely will work with CR2 and CRW files from most other Canon models as well) -- including any other files with the same base filename (for instance, if you had an IMG_1234.CR2, IMG_1234.JPG, and IMG_1234.tiff, and IMG_1234.CR2.bib, it'd rename 'em all based on either the JPG or CR2's EXIF, whichever was available).

Works under Linux and Windows (via cygwin) -- one-step drag-n-drop filenames/directories under Windows, or just specify directories and/or filenames on the command line under Linux. Dead simple, but useful if it fits your workflow. If anybody's interested in using it, I'd be happy to send it to 'em.

Thanks for the pointers to find what I needed to get it working!
