The odd thing about this is that the black banding can
be on *any* side of the photo.  Older EOS bodies often
suffer from deterioration of the rubber bump stop for
the shutter. When it gets older the rubber starts to
turn to goo and then coats the shutter blades with
rubber (looks a bit like grease, but it's sticky, not
a lubricant).  This causes the shutter blades to start
sticking, sometimes only opening part way, sometimes
not opening at all. The worse it gets the more often
this occurs.

This could account for blacked out areas at the top
and bottom of the long side of the frame, as that's
the way the shutter leaves move and are typical
symptoms of this problem.  I don't know how it could
account for blackout on the other two sides though, so
maybe this is not the problem (or maybe not the *only*
problem).

No ideas on these two, other than flash circuit
malfunction in the camera body.
