Here's a webpage that shows how to replace the rubber shutter bumper,
which is definitely your problem:

http://www.geocities.jp/msawa1919/eos/eos000.htm

Sure it's in Japanese but the photos tell the story.

BTW, this guy repaired a couple of EOS 1000s (Rebel S) for about $25
bucks each. He does understand English too, so if you want yours
repaired well, and very cheap, you might contact him about shipping
your camera to him. He can only do 1000, 1000S (Rebel, Rebel S)
because of their 'relative' simplicity. If you look at those pages
though, simple it's NOT.

He's incredibly honest and friendly. He replaced the bottom plate on
one camera because it had a small piece broken off. No charge. I
didn't even ask for him to do it.

BTW my EOS 10qd also developed the same problem but was unfixable
because of the added complexity. Only the factory can do the more
advanced models and the price is way more than a good used one is
worth. I picked up a mint 55 for less than the cost of a factory
repair, and that's way more camera than the old 10qd. I recently sold
the 55 for about the same as I paid for it. I still keep the 1000S
because it's not worth selling. It's my backup camera. It is very
light and might see use on a trip.

Backpacking with something like the EOS 1000 (Rebel) and a 75-300 lens
would be like just carrying the 10D body only in weight.

Oh the other hand, it might be worth having the factory do a model 630
because there is no other body like it and some people do like them
for their unique abilities like focus screen changing. A friend (Hi
Chris, you still out there? Email me OK?) said he got a 630 done for
about $150.
