I have the same problem with my 100-400L and Elan 7e. It only happens a
couple of times per year and the only way to fix it is to remove the lens
(same as your Elan 7).

I've just bought an Elan 7ne (my 7e doesn't track moving objects very well
- it used too), it'll be interesting to see if the same problem occurs.

I sent my Elan 7e & 100-400 to Canon for repair last summer, they said
"they're working within specs".
