2) At 24mm FOV and 0.35m (14"), the flash will only just fill a 0.6m (24") umbrella. I have to use the 17mm wide-angle diffuser in my 115cm (46") umbrella.

Thanks. I wondered about the 17mm wide panel. I had flipped it down that night but when I observed the display begin to blink, because I have the head turned, I figured it was not going to fire. After getting my head back into the 550's manual I see that it doesn't say it wont fire. Hopefully I'll get to try it later tonight. The umbrella is a 36" so I guess the wide panel will need to be out.
