14" distance from the flash to the umbrella seems a bit short (my set up is close to 20" to spread the light wider to the umbrella), what is the type of umbrella you are using? is it translucent white (which will waste a lot of light) or opaque (either solid white or silver specular) ?

Thanks. The 14" distance is about all I have with this umbrella. It's at the end of its pole. I have another umbrella that is about 9" longer, and is 45" diameter. All are translucent white. I'll try the larger one and increase the flash head to umbrella distance and see how that goes.
