The updaters come as .sea archives. If you use OS X, start Stuffit Expander (in Applications | Utilities ), then drag and drop the .sea files on the Stuffit expander window. When I do this, I get DPP in a .pkg installer, EVU and ECU installers in a couple of nested folders. However did you end up with a .gz file? GZ is a gnuzip archive, which can be unzipped using gunzip. Even Canon knows how disoriented Mac users become if forced to use the terminal bash shell!
