I agree whole heartedly. However, there is another
aspect of this and that is the legal one. I read
sometime back somewhere that Lexmark stopped a
manufacturer from selling much cheaper cartridges to a
Lexmark printer. The reason ? Apparently that
particular printer recognized non-lexmark cartridges
and someone figured out a way to fool the printer into
accepting their impostor to be the real McCoy. Now
that was grounds for copyright infringement.

I see many instances where companies willingly part
ways over standards just so that they have such cash
cows all to themselves. The reason publicized almost
always has nothing to do with technical superiority,
but rather economic sense and long term product
placement strategies. In fact I would think that the
inkjet and laserjet technology should be cut and dried
for most applications (except perhaps pro level
equipment) to an extent that all cartridges should be
compliant at one level or another and any player is
able to sell at any price point as long as there is
demand. But that is not the case. Same with cellphone
batteries, camera batteries, and much more.
