You'll find the 580/550EX are too weak for real studio work with umbrellas or softboxes unless you get the REAL CLOSE to the subject. If you look at Canon's examples in their catalogues, they are usually using direct flash (ugly shadows and all).
Nothing beats a full power studio strobe, unfortunately.
