I have the 50/1.8 Mk I. I've searched the used market until I found one.
However, it can be as expensive as a new 50/1.8 II. Its built quality is
superior to that of the all-plastic 50/1.8 II (as good as the 50/1.4 maybe).
Only downside: it's noisy. I mean NOISY! All my other lenses are USM and
when I use the 50mm, its noise becomes disturbing. Nonetheless, you can
always focus it manually. Its focusing ring is not as wide as that of the
50/1.4, but is still useable. I believe the 50/1.8 II has no focusing ring
at all (someone correct me if I'm wrong).A friend used to borrow my 50/1.8
Mk I and then decided to buy a 50/1.8 II for himself. He was very
disappointed with the build quality (remember he was used to using mine).
For me the 50/1.4 is overpriced. Not really worth buying unless you use it a
lot.
