Here are the reasons I used a UV filter:
1. Protection - a permanent cover for the lens to protect it from dust, nicks
and knocks.
2. UV and Haze. Have never noticed a difference with this (on both film and
digital).

On a digital, case 1 is still important. I even have a UV filter on my G3 and
my Sony camcorder.
Case 2 is based on your perception.

For many, a UV filter is just another layer of glass, which can lead to flare
and other issues. So many people don't use it because of this reason.
