Hi, I've got both the 70-200 4.0 and the Canon 1.4 converter. This is a very good combination. Obviously it becomes a 300/5.6 so you need more light or a higher ISO (or a tripod). The AF is slowed down by the camera to prevent the AF from hunting. I've bought the converter for the exact same reason as you have: for casual work and the odd long shot.
