The problem with Sigma and apertures is well known. My EOS 3 would lock up on my Sigma zoom until I had it rechipped (for free from Sigma USA). It then did it again when I got my 10D (err 99).
Unfortunately, you can only rechip once, so I've heard. I haven't asked Sigma directly though.
