Hi Grant,

More pixels don't mean squat past 3 or 4MP in a point and shoot camera given
that you don't output larger than 8"x10" or so. If you need to print larger
and want to avoid image noise buy a used EOS 10D, they're certainly cheap
enough now. Pass on the newer G5/6 P&S cameras they are larger/heavier than
you think and offer no significant advantage (G5? think lots of noise, the
G6 noise is much lower!), over the newer smaller models. The "A", "S" or
"SD" range point and shoot cameras can pack virtually all of the features of
the higher end models with similar lower noise levels (than G5), and are
MUCH MORE pocketable, think small deck of cards with a zoom. The larger S70
and S60 are just too big to be true pocket cameras, think grandma and
grandpa's camera.

Okay, having said all that the smallest of these cameras do not have true
full manual exposure control as do the "G"'s but I find that by using a
combination of exposure compensation and manually setting the ISO speed I
have plenty of options for most any non-pro use. If you must have full
manual exposure control look at the small grip A75/85/95's, they are
fantastic cameras, not as compact or light as the gripless P&S's I mention
here but they are much smaller and lighter weight and have a more pocketable
shape than the "G"'s. The S500/410 are both very capable but much smaller
and can easily slip into any available pocket. The SD100/200/300 are even
more compact and more pocketable with their newer soft edged shapes than the
S500/410's with similar capabilities. If you don't need a zoom and a few
minor extra features the SD10/20 are incredibly small and can literally go
anywhere you do and still produce the same level of quality.

I shoot professionally with first gen EOS 1D and EOS 1Ds bodies. When the
going gets tough (family and friends outings, parties etc.), I carry one or
two of these 3MP or 5MP P&S cameras. This allows me to enjoy the
outing/party and let the kids do some of the shooting. I love a child's
perspective of these events and I'm always surprised and delighted at the
images they think to capture.

Cheers/Chip
