Canon has also said that the two 1D models will eventually merge into a
single model, perhaps next time around.

The different models are classified by

1. The size of the sensor
2. The capabilities of the bodies
3. The strength of the bodies

You can make combination and get different possibilities but IMHO my idea of the future is

a. A combined 1D and 1Ds with full format sensor. It's a matter of a more advanced software that allow quickest management of pictures, let's say a !Ds with bigger buffer and 8 fps.
b. A 1.3 sensor declined in 8 and 11 Mpixels with a plastic body for the former and metallic for the later.

So this would make something like -I'm jut guessing-

EOS 1Dn for a FF 16 Mpixels or more and 8FPS in a 1D body.
EOS 3D for 1.3 sensor 11 or more Mpixels in a EOS 3 metal body
EOS 3000D for 1.3 sensor with 8Mpixels or more in a plastic body truly available

Felix
